Baker Canyon in Colorado. A place shunned by native tribes since prehistory. A place they considered to harbor evil. A place where coal has been discovered and miners labor daily to wrest it from the mountain. Hank Steadman is the foreman of a crew of miners who go deep into the bowels of the mountain one day and never come out. The one surviving miner, John Sanger, claims that Steadman took his men to the wrong part of the mine and he alone is responsible for the deaths of his men. But is Sanger’s story true, or is he lying to cover up his own sordid secret?
Half a century later, Cuthbert Sweet comes on the scene. A giant of a man, Sweet is rich and eccentric. He has inherited the old mine and stumbles onto something that could clear up the fifty year old mystery. But his cousins, the children of the sole survivor of the long ago disaster, will do anything they can to keep him from exposing the truth—anything.

C.M. Curtis knows so much about so many things that I must admit to expecting perfection. Like the old saying; "he have done so much with so little for so long that everyone expects him to do everything with nothing."
So, I was surprised when he committed a slight error in this book, by having his hero, Mr. Sweet, sign and deliver the paper work giving Patricia a third of the coal mine; then later simply saying that since the papers had not been recorded, he was changing the gift to to her son. That doesn't work. Once the deed is signed and delivered, it cannot be revoked without the consent of Patricia, who needed the money to get out of all of her troubles.

A slight mistake in the author's research.

I was not surprised that C.M. Curtis was a miner and knows details of a coal mine. I have read and enjoyed his other books immensely, and this book is right up there with his best work.

The characters are well drawn and believable, and Cuthbert is delightful. The insight into a morbidly obese man who accepts himself without apology is refreshing, and gave me pause in my own prejudices.

The story line is believable, suspenseful and has a satisfying conclusion.

I recommend this book without reservation.

Across the Dark edition by CM Curtis Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

Cuthbert is an unexpected protagonist who relies on his own smarts and tenacity to survive multiple attempts on his life. The story is gripping and fast. The author brings the setting to life. One weak point is the frequent references to Cuthbert's size. I highly recommend this book.
At an age when authors seem to produce stories like off an assembly line, u know, three books a year to fulfill their contract, a reader stumbles across a rare find that is C.M. Curtis. An author who believes in quality before quantity. I have read all of his books and have loved every one of them. Across the Dark is one of the few stories that will stick in your mind long after you have finished the book. Please read it.
Known Doc Curtis for a while, glad to call him my friend. Was not sure what to expect as this was my first book of his. Across the Dark begins with building characters and the workings of a mine. The book is filled with curiosity, characters, mystery, as the plot begins build, the intricacies the author uses keeps the reader wanting more and more. I spent the next two evenings reading this book well into the wee hours of the morning having to cheer on Cuthbert. Thanks Doc, onto the next C.M. Curtis masterpiece.
This book was a great story of good versus evil. It held my attention to the end. I thought part of the conclusion to the problem while trapped in the mine could have been said in fewer pages, still, it was an excellent book.
Again Curtis has drawn me into a place in which I have never had any iota of interest, a coal mine. I now feel able to discuss with greater understanding coal mines, miners and the dangerous, difficult and backbreaking work they do. He weaves his stories in a spellbinding manner, with the reader unaware that he/she is being led through a crescendo which will only disclose all explanations at the finale. I recommend any C. M. Curtis book with no reservations.
I have really enjoyed the books by this author. He is perhaps my favorite contemporary author of classic style westerns. This story is no a western, per se, but has a similar good guy/bad guy feel and is a good read. The protagonist is mostly believable and the story keeps you engaged. I highly recommend the book and the author.
I wasn't sure what to expect when I started reading this book. What I got was intrigue, mystery, and adventure, all tied together with the underlying emotions of love, grief, hope, fear, and triumph. I found myself pulled deeper and deeper into this well written story making it difficult to put down. Some of the technical commentary about mining lost me, but I understood it's necessity and was able to pick up the story regardless. Well rounded and believable characters and a great plot; I highly recommend this book.
